The Absestos Disease Foundation of Australia is a nonprofit organization formed in support of victims of asbestos.  Similar organizations exist throughout the United States regarding a variety of hazardous materials and industry practices.  Many such organizations have local chapters within Michigan.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is main federal agency concerned with roadway safety.  The NHTSA has an ongoing campaign to reduce accidents caused by distracted driving.   State agencies such as the Michigan Department of Transportation also seek to promote roadway safety on state and local roads.

The National Safety Council is the United States’ largest nongovernmental  organization that works closely with business organizations to promote injury prevention.  The NSC has local affiliates in most states.  Michigan affliliates include the Safety Council for Southeast Michigan and the Lansing Area Safety Council. Similar organizations within Michigan include the Mid-Michigan Safety Council and the Safety Council for West Michigan.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents is the United Kingdom’s leading nongovernmental organization dedicated to the prevention of accidental injury and death. The organization operates similar to the National Safety Council in the United States and the Canada Safety Council north of the border.

Now part of the Infrastructure Health and Safety Association of Ontario.  The Construction Safety Association is an organization dedicated to improving safety in one of the more dangerous employment sectors. The organization works closely with the provincial government and in this way is similar to the combined efforts of Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the safety programs of the Michigan Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America.

The CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control and the Consumer Product Safety Commission are the main federal governmental organizations charged with preventing accidental injury and death occurring off-the-job.  Within Michigan the Injury & Violence Prevention Section and the University of Michigan Injury Center play similar roles on a more local level.
